Famous Kathak emperor Pandit Birju Maharaj has passed away at the age of 83. His relatives informed about this on Monday morning. It was told that Birju Maharaj died of a heart attack.

Birju Maharaj died of a heart attack on Sunday night at his Delhi residence, according to an ANI report. At that time he was playing with his grandson. It is being told that Birju Maharaj’s health deteriorated during that time and he fainted. Birju Maharaj was immediately taken to Saket Hospital.

After investigation, the doctors declared Birju Maharaj dead (Pandit Birju Maharaj passes away). According to the reports, Birju Maharaj came to know about a kidney related disease a few days back and since that time he was on dialysis.

There has been a wave of mourning in Bollywood due to the death of Birju Maharaj. Adnan Sami and Malini Awasthi also expressed grief over the passing away of Birju Maharaj and paid tribute.


Born in the Kalka-Binadin gharana of Lucknow

The real name of Birju Maharaj was Brij Mohan Nath Mishra. He was born on 14 February 1938 in the Kalka-Binadin gharana of Lucknow, which is related to Kathak dance. He was not only a dancer but also a choreographer and composer and singer.

Started teaching Kathak from the age of 13

Birju Maharaj started teaching Kathak from the age of just 13. He taught Kathak at Sangeet Bharati and Bharatiya Kala Kendra in Delhi. He was honored with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Vibhushan, Kalidas Samman and Lata Mangeshkar Award.
