Omicron variant cases will peak in February: Fauci

Washington: In most states of America, cases of the new variant of Corona, Omicron, will reach its peak by mid-February. This information has been given by America’s top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci. “You shouldn’t be overconfident even if you’re defending yourself against this virus,” Fauci said in an interview with ABC News on Sunday.

“Things are looking good. We feel we are headed in the right direction,” he said.

Fauci said that there are states in the northeast and upper midwest where cases have already peaked, there has been a sharp decline, but cases are still increasing in southern and western states, Xinhua news agency reported.

“There will still be problems with hospitalization in countries that have not been fully immunized or have not been given a booster dose,” he warned.

Recently there has been a spurt in cases of the new variant Omicron in the US, leading to record hospitalizations and severe shortages of health workers.

As of Sunday afternoon, the country has recorded more than 70 million cases and nearly 866,000 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
