New Delhi: The smartphone market in India achieved a record 162 million shipments in 2021, growing at 12 per cent in 2020. This information was given in a new report. After a rough start to the year, due to the second wave of COVID-19, India made a strong recovery in the second half, according to a report by market research firm Canalys.

Canalys analyst Sanyam Chaurasia said in a statement, “Smartphone shipments hit an all-time high for the full year, driven by vaccination rollouts, market reopening and demand sluggishness. Both replacement demand and those migrating to smartphones.” Growth is expected to continue in 2022, driven by new customers.

After a strong comeback in the third quarter, smartphone vendors shipped 44.5 million devices in the fourth quarter, up 2 percent, despite a challenging supply chain.

Xiaomi was the leader, shipping 9.3 million units and maintaining its 21 percent market share. Samsung stood second with 8.5 million units with a share of 19 per cent.

Realme has jumped to the third position in India for the first time, with a year-on-year growth of 49 percent, reaching 7.6 million shipments. Vivo and Oppo took the fourth and fifth positions with 5.6 million and 4.9 million units respectively.

“Overall, India will see an upward movement towards secure technologies in the future, with smartphones at the core of the digital ecosystem and more essential to the daily lives of Indian citizens,” Chaurasia said.
